Discovery || Abacus Bookbinding Florence

I find great joy in finding gems in a foreign city without the help of any prior knowledge.  Today I fell upon one of the most incredible shops that specialized in bookbinding.  Run by Rafaelle and his wife Rita, they specialize in classic bookbinding.

Since 1985 our store is well-known in Florence for offering the best in bookbinding and book restoration, with absolute honesty and professionality, and for the skill used in accomplishing the commissioned work.

To call them artists would be an understatement.  Located in the heart of Firenze, I took a glance at the window display and knew I fell upon something.  I looked on the door and noticed a sign that read “I’m in the workshop next door”.  Lo and behold, Rafaelle was in the actual workshop where all the great books are made and I promptly asked him if I could see his shop.  Of course, there was quite a bit of a language barrier and it was difficult to communicate, but the art spoke for itself.  The books are beautifully made in leather sourced from Florence in methods that date back millennia.

As of late, I’ve been on a bit of a notebook crazy, trying various Moleskins, Field Notes, and other random goodies.  So today I purchased a natural leather bound notebook that I found to be amazing.  After selecting the notebook, he meticulously opens it, packages it, and hands it to me.  Check out their website and enjoy the pictures.

Vintage Pendleton Flannels

leave a comment »

20090716-IMG_0004So I said in my Rose Bowl post a few days ago that I’d bring you some more info about some of my pickups.  Here are 2 vintage Pendleton flannels I picked up last weekend at the Rose Bowl Flea Market.  Obviously this is awful weather to attempt to wear these, but nonetheless should kickass once the clouds start forming again.  Should be more of a testament for how painfully awesome the Rose Bowl Flea Market is.

I’m still digging up info about vintage Pendleton shirts, but all I’ve managed to find in their website was some obvious revelations.  They’ve been at it for 100+ years, making the best wool products in America, top notch, luxury fabrics, yada yada yada.  If anyone has any info on these, let me know.

Rose Bowl Flea Market

I’ve gone to the last two Rose Bowl Flea Markets and I find myself perpetually mesmerized.  There’s a mountain full of treasures to find, and every single thing entails some form of lesson, whether it be denim, clothes, era, fabric, craftsman, author, location, history, etc.  Here’s a shot of my pickups from yesterday.  More on these later.  All-around, a wonderful way to spend the Sunday morning.

Top Left to Right: 1960’s Magazines, Harley Davidson Book of Fashions by Rin Tanaka (!!!).

Bottom Left to Right: 2 Vintage Pendleton Flannel’s, Navy T-shirt, Vintage Navy Thermal, ’76 Army Shirt w/ Peace Sign for the lady.
