Goodbye, my Edinburgh

leave a comment »

From the awe of my first glimpse of the Royal Mile, I knew I was in for something.  That something I didn’t quite understand at the time, but man did I learn.  The sounds of bag pipes along Princes Street, the underground clubs on Cowgate, the Ceilidh band in McEwan Hall.  Hundreds of students in a monolith hundreds of years old dancing to hundreds of songs.  It was beautiful and freeing.

There’s a charm about walking into Meadow Bar, taking in a Guinness or Deuchars if you’re feeling for a light ale.  There’s also a charm to a good Ardbeg to end the night strong.  There’s a charm when you walk outside a pub with your coat and gloves in hand, and not a bit of cold hits you until your 5th step, when the cold, definitely, hits you. Or you can just do it the easy way with some White Lightning and a flat mate of Scots.

Nothing quite like ending the night at a friend’s flat and talking about endless things, or starting the day climbing Arthur’s Seat and reveling at the sight.  Or marching off to Waverley to catch the next plane to wherever.  There’s nothing quite like the constant wind, screwing up your night of sleep.

There’s nothing like the friend’s you make on the biggest 4 months of your life.  It’s tough to walk back to normality when everyday is bubbling with abnormality.  Words are jumbled but memories don’t need to be.

Edinburgh is quite a place, and I’ll miss you.

Midnight Delirium

leave a comment »

Something about early sunsets in Edinburgh makes the midnights seem even darker.  It doesn’t help when you have to stay up late to finish some work.  Here’s me trying to capture that, while listening to a very delirium-inducing, emotion-twisting Bon Iver song.

Eurotrip 2009 || Day 4 “Scotch Whiskey”

leave a comment »

Today we ventured into the fabled Edinburgh Castle, and I get the sense that the Scottish are as patriotic as any other country, which is great!  My appreciation for Scottish culture has grown comfortably and my tolerance and even enjoyment of the pipes has budded.  I then had an excellent tour of the process and tasting of Scotch Whiskey.  12 year old single malt whiskey from the Islay.  If you can’t tell, I’m giggling.

Later:  I’m currently at London Stansted airport spending the night.  Who knew there were so many poor traveling college folk who couldn’t afford housing for the evening? Rome tomorrow.  Thanks for reading my friends, it’s been fun taking pictures and writing down my thoughts, I hope you keep along.

Eurotrip 2009 || Day 3 “Festival!”

A free 3 hour walking tour?  You betcha, today was an incredible day in Edinburgh.  Something about the boiling hotpot of history, tradition, and youth brings this city a very lovable quality.  I understand why Heather (our tour guide) fell in love with Edinburgh and has remained in this old town.  For once, I hope I don’t fall in love.

Eurotrip 2009 || Day 2 “Storybook”

Ah, my first glance of Edinburgh is overwhelming and intimidating.  I’m having trouble identifying what and where I’ll be spending my time these next few months when ancient castles call for me to “explore the haunted passageways”.  We’ll see what’s in store, but for now, whiskey and fish and chips beckons me.  The festival is awesome!
