Essential || Sunglasses

The aviator.  It’s understood throughout the world that the aviator is the most defining piece in sunglass technology, used throughout the armed forces of the world as well as on nearly every part of the world that is blessed with sunshine.  The web over the past couple years has been buzzing about Randolph Engineering sunglasses.  A relatively affordable brand that makes extremely quality sunglasses (far better than Lenscrafter owned Ray Ban), licensed for the U.S. Military, worn by Don Draper.  So good, in fact, that I bought myself a pair, wore it around Europe, and then subsequently lost it very recently.

Then, I found American Optical.  The company finds its roots in 1826 where it then flourished over the next century to become one of the main suppliers of the U.S. Military’s optical equipment from gun sights to flight goggles.  In 1958, Flight Goggle 58 became the Original Pilot that I purchased a few weeks ago.  Still manufactured in Massachusetts, the gold pair goes for an easy $50 on Amazon, a ridiculous price for a pair identical to the Randolph Engineering pair and far exceeding the quality of other aviators on the market today.  I personally opted for the ‘comfort cable’ temples, which gives me a more secure fit to my face than the ‘bayonet’ temples.  It doesn’t get more classic than this.

Essential || Chambray Shirt

leave a comment »

I don’t think there’s any shirt in my closet the past year that I’ve worn more than my J.Crew Chambray Utility Shirt (destruction seen below). I literally pulled it out whenever I was in a hurry, but all the wearing and laundering has eventually rendered it torn and full of holes.  This, as any denimhead would agree, is fantastic, but it also means I can’t wear it as often.

Enter one of my most coveted brands.  RRL.  Ralph’s cult-like following is well-documented and his reproductions are spot on.  The prices are far higher than I can afford, so it’s always been far out of reach.  Until…

…I bought this shirt at a killer price on eBay.  Beautiful.

Week 33 Roundup || Porsches in the Wild

with 2 comments

This is the first of a new weekly roundup of things seen across the web. Feel free to submit things for next week’s corral.

Porsches in the Wild are always eye catching. A Time to Get pleasures us with more great shots from his iPhone.

Lightweight Campers make me want to go on a really long hiatus across the country. Re-nest reports on a portable toilet too.

Fall 2010 Essentials: Heavy Tweed isn’t just a Fall 2010 essential, it’s a Fall for the rest of your life one, get it right Made to Measure!

Wasteland Festival Trailer is truly a fascinating looking trailer dug up by 2 or 3 things I know.  Let’s hope it’ll come by near me one day.

A city where you can drink free beer while making your own art in an art exhibit as a band from Eastern Europe rocks out about ganja.  Then you proceed to go biking with a basket of farmer’s market fruit to the other side of town, just so you can drink some coffee.  Enjoy…

Denim || Repairs, Contest, Update

leave a comment »

It’s been a while since I’ve updated anything.  Thought it would be nice to start it off again with some pictures of these 2 babies.  Repairs were done. I’ve worn the SExDBxS09 from Dry Bones for about 16 months now, and the Dry Bones Red-D for maybe 1 year total.  They had some seriously debilitating wear and tear that made them less than ideal for use… of course until last week.

Sent them into Schaeffer Garment Hotel for some repairs per recommendations from a couple cool cats on Superfuture.  Robert, who used to run Denim Doctors, and his crew helped patch them up real nice.  The SExDBxS09 had pocket reinforcements (they were torn to bits), knee reinforcements through a super fancy reconstruction method, and a hem/chainstitch.  The Red-D’s had the knees patched with old denim, the rear end patched, and a hem/chainstitch too.  Enjoy.

Be safe everyone.  Make sure you go through the motions and watch the Rose Parade and pop a beer back during the “Grandaddy of them All”.  Enjoy.
